Secret of Mana review

Secret of Mana

We review Secret of Mana, a classic RPG for iPhone

Originally released way back in 1993, Secret of Mana (also known as Seiken Densetsu 2 in its native Japan) is considered to be one of the finest role playing games in existence.

Now that statement might sound a bit trite, and the term ‘genre classic’ is thrown about with gay abandon these days, but sometimes these statements simply need to be accepted as fact, and this is most definitely one of those cases.

Secret of Mana is a bold and beautiful video game that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.

You can therefore appreciate why its launch on Apple’s iPhone has caused such a frenzy of expectation; like some kind of glorious, long-awaited homecoming, Secret of Mana has been welcomed onto the App Store with open arms.

The good news is that for the most part, this adulation is wholly justified – this is the same game that SNES fans know, love and have cherished for over fifteen years.

It’s not an entirely faultless port however, and there are some unfortunate shortcomings that do much to sully the experience.

For the uninitiated, Secret of Mana is an action RPG with cute characters and an epic storyline. You’re placed in the colourful clothing of an unlikely hero who unwittingly kick-starts a crusade against the forces of evil when he pulls a mythical sword from a stone.

Joined by a feisty young girl and a dumpy, dwarf-like sprite, you on-screen avatar has to fight his way through a massive game world to restore order and balance.

You’ll spend much of Secret of Mana wandering around the painfully gorgeous 2D world, conversing with friendly characters and unlocking more and more of what proves to be a riveting plot.

You’ll also do your fair share of fighting, both with physical weapons and potent spells. The combat takes place in real time, although your actions incur recharge times which lends the game a turn-based feel.

One of Secret of Mana’s innovations back in 1993 was the ‘ring menu’, a system of selecting items that has never really been bettered, even after all this time.

This interface has been skilfully adapted to take advantage of the iPhone’s touch screen, which requires quick and intuitive menu configurations.

%%break%%

The transition to Apple’s portable device hasn’t been entirely kind on Secret of Mana, however. For starters, the virtual stick lacks the precision required for the fast and furious battle sequences.

Although fellow iPhone RPG such as Final Fantasy II were less affected by the virtual controls, this was largely due to the fact that the gameplay was much slower and didn’t rely on rapid reactions.

Secret of Mana’s combat is more demanding, and the difference between success and failure can often be down to something as simple as positioning your character in the right place – a task which is rendered unnecessarily difficult by the touch screen controls.

One of Secret of Mana’s most notable features is its music, which has to rank as one of the finest chip-tune soundtracks ever composed.

Rather than emulate the SNES’ powerful sound hardware, Square Enix has decided instead to convert the audio into MP3-like music files, which play on a constant loop. The problem is they don’t loop neatly. It’s a minor issue but it’s sure to annoy purists who worship the original game.

The final problem with this conversion is the lack of multiplayer. The SNES game allowed players to use the Super Multitap accessory so that three people could join the quest – each one controlling a different member of the heroic trio.

That option has been expunged from this edition, which is a crying shame because it would have been perfectly possible via Bluetooth. In fact, we would have liked Square Enix to have gone the extra mile and have factored in online co-op play, but it’s not to be.

Despite these grievances, Secret of Mana remains a truly mesmerising RPG, and easily qualifies as one of the best currently doing the rounds on the App Store.

The mixture of stunning visuals, amazing (albeit poorly looped) music and gripping gameplay make this one of the most magical games you’ll play this year. When you consider how expensive the SNES original is these days, you can’t even argue with the somewhat lofty (by App Store standards, at least) price tag.

Microsoft kicks off effort to rid the world of Internet Explorer 6

"Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer 6." A quote from any random web developer over the past ten years? Nope, that's from Microsoft itself, and it's featured on the Internet Explorer 6 Countdown site that the company just launched today. As you can see above, the site also includes statistics on IE6 use around the world (China is apparently the biggest offender by a wide margin), as well as information about how you can "join the cause" and educate others about the perils of using such a horrible, outdated web browser.

AT&T and Cisco have WiFi on the cable box backwards

Adding WiFi to a cable set-top box is probably something every geek has thought would be a great idea, but we suspect you and AT&T aren't on the same page. You were probably thinking it'd be cool to stream viral internet videos to the big screen without switching inputs, or maybe you thought it'd be cool to ditch the cable modem and WiFi access point and feed your laptop internet via the same box you deliver your HD with. Nope, AT&T and Cisco obviously don't think those are worthy ideas, and instead, this new box simply works without a coax cable. We suppose there's a market for this as only like 90 percent of TVs have coax running to them already -- and no new house is built these days without 'em -- but we have tried to stream HD via WiFi and it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that it doesn't "just work." Of course the fact that U-Verse's H.264 streams are pitifully over-compressed should help, but even when you add that to the great performance of 802.11n, we suspect you'd still be better served by a good ol' copper wire.

Bungie: MMO announcement during GDC panel was a joke

In its latest weekly update, Bungie took some time to backtrack on lead network engineer David Aldridge's GDC announcement that the studio's next game would be "massively multiplayer," and similar to "WoW in space." The update explains, "Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors." Apparently, he was super, super incorrect in that assumption.

It's worth noting that the update doesn't flatly deny that the studio is working on a massively online game -- unless, of course, that denial is hidden somewhere among the cornucopia of Charlie Sheen references. We're having a hard time breaking that particular code.

Teachers-in-training to get pointers, CIA updates via wireless headsets

Okay, so maybe there's no actual guarantee that headset-wearing teachers will be able to tune into top secret broadcasts from the nation's capitol, but once the infrastructure is in place, it's just a matter of time before everyone's moonlighting as an operative. As the story goes, a gaggle of teachers are volunteering to take part in a Teach for America campaign that puts a bug into their ear and a mentor on the other end. The idea would be to rapidly bring a teacher up to speed by correcting and shaping their technique as it happens, and the potential implications and applications are both vast and numerous. For example, PhDs in foreign nations could one day remotely tutor rural math teachers if Obama's national broadband plan takes hold, and if they're feeling a bit comical, they could throw question marks onto the end of each pointer à la Anchorman. The trial is being funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mass Effect 2 composer Jack Wall explains his departure from the franchise

Though the Mass Effect series has made good on its promise to preserve and carry over important elements between games, prolific composer Jack Wall has elected to depart and pursue several other projects before BioWare launches Mass Effect 3 later this year.

"Well, I've had a great relationship with BioWare for five years, and I think, you know, as with any important relationship it's complicated," Wall said. "Now I'm working with other clients and it feels fresh to me and I think they feel the same way, so I think it's just time to move on. I have nothing but love for those people. I'm sure I'll see them again. It's just time for a break, maybe."

During a Thursday morning GDC session, Wall discussed the interactive scoring methods he and a team of composers (including Sam Hulick, David Kates and Jimmy Hinson) used to craft and integrate three hours of music into the game. The reactive score, blended with numerous transitions between battle scenes, moments of exploration and dialogue, was built on a considerable basis of technical procedure and experience -- which Wall and his team take with them before Black Swan composer Clint Mansell begins work on Mass Effect 3. According to Wall, film composers can transition smoothly into games, provided they're effectively directed by the game development team.

"As long as you have someone doing what we did on the game development side, you can get away with that, and have just somebody write great music and direct them how to do it," Wall said. "I think it's totally fine. It depends what you're looking for as a game developer, really. Do you need somebody with that knowledge, or no? Sometimes, you know, I'm just interested in all that stuff, so I bring that with me, and that's an asset I have, right? But it doesn't necessarily make me more suited to a particular project, unless the developer feels it is. So, I'm having a really good time with that knowledge now, because it really makes me think differently about how I compose for games."

Thinking "differently" and being agile is essential in successful interactive scoring, especially when game development doesn't proceed perfectly according to plan (and when does it ever?). "I do things relevant, so I do think there's a learning curve," Wall said, who began working on music for Mass Effect 2's final sequence before BioWare could even share a working level. "I hope Clint Mansell can get up to speed on that quick and doesn't feel too overwhelmed. He's a very talented guy, so I'm sure it'll be great."

Battlefield Heroes is far from 'practically ruined,' GM Ben Cousins says

Today's GDC panel on Battlefield Heroes had general manager Ben Cousins rectifying the misconceptions about his studio's first free-to-play Battlefield game being "practically ruined." Cousins' talk centered around the allegations made by press (originating with his game's own forumgoers) that paid weapons were introduced that allegedly unbalanced the game in favor of players willing to shell out cash.

Rather than panicking and reacting directly to the loudest voices -- and perhaps some overly reactionary press -- Easy Studio instead applied math. The develoeprs noticed that, despite all the negative attention, user numbers weren't dropping. Furthermore, they took the information of their forum members and discovered that, while the average BFH player would spend around 25 cents per month, forum members were spending -- on average -- about $22 (dollars!) per month.

Moreover, the actively complaining population only made up about 2 percent of the overall player base. What Cousins' team discovered as a result is that most folks playing the game really didn't care about the introduction of the paid weapons. Cousins likened it to fancy sports equipment -- while it might impart a slight advantage to folks willing to pay, the disparity was made up for by the game's mechanics. User numbers remained consistent and, eventually, the complaints subsided.

Having established what he considers to be this working business model in Heroes, Cousins is confident in East Studio's next effort, Battlefield Play4Free.

Minecraft, Amnesia Top Winners At 13th Annual IGF Awards

Swedish developer Mojang's acclaimed 3D world-building sandbox title, Minecraft was a big winner at the 13th Annual Independent Games Festival tonight at Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, earning the Seumas McNally Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, as well as the community-voted Audience Award.

In a diverse set of award-winners, other Independent Games Festival award recipients included Frictional Games' psychological horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which took home awards for Technical Excellence and Excellence in Audio, as well as the sponsor-supported Direct2Drive Vision Award.

Elsewhere, noted independent developer Messhof received the $5,000 Nuovo Award ? which honors abstract, shortform, and unconventional game development which "advances the medium and the way we think about games" ? for his two-player art game, Nidhogg.

In addition, QCF Design's short playtime dungeon crawl adventure Desktop Dungeons earned the award for Excellence in Design, and the Excellence in Visual Art award was won by Gaijin Games' retro-psychedelic BIT.TRIP RUNNER.

Finally, the award for the Best Student Game went to the Myst-like abstract adventure game FRACT, from the University of Montreal, and Best Mobile Game was awarded to Ratloop's unique 'line of sight' puzzler Helsing's Fire.

All of this year's IGF winners and finalists are playable at Game Developers Conference at the IGF Pavilion on the GDC Expo Floor, which is open Wednesday, March 2nd through Friday, March 4th.

Previous breakout Independent Games Festival award-winners include titles such as Braid, Limbo, Audiosurf, Castle Crashers, and World of Goo, and this year's awards saw more than 650 total competition entries from all over the world.

The Independent Games Festival ? which also includes a two-day Independent Games Summit on Monday, February 28th and Tuesday, March 1st as part of GDC ? was established in 1998 by UBM TechWeb Game Network to encourage the rise of independent game development and to recognize the best independent game titles, in the same way that the Sundance Film Festival has honored the independent film community.

Organizers would like to thank this year's kind supporters of the IGF, including Crytek (Platinum Sponsor), Microsoft (Gold Sponsor), LucasArts (Gold Sponsor), Direct2Drive (Distribution Partner), OnLive (Hardware Platform Sponsor), Transgaming (Platform Sponsor), DigiPen (Student Showcase Platinum Sponsor), ENJMIN (Student Showcase Gold Sponsor), and Westwood College (Student Showcase Gold Sponsor). The IGF offers finalists both global exposure and over $50,000 in cash prizes to each year's winners.

"This year's record number of entrants were of some of the highest quality we've yet seen in the festival," said IGF Chairman Brandon Boyer. "Congratulations to all the winners, who continue to raise the bar for what independent games can achieve. We're all excited to continue showcasing the best in independent games, at the games industry's highest-profile annual event."
